A Journey Through Time: My Unforgettable Turkish Adventure

In 2022, my wanderlust took me on an unforgettable journey across Europe, visiting six different countries and embracing the beauty of each. During that time, travelers who had a Schengen Visa could apply for a Turkey E-visa, and I seized the opportunity to add another incredible destination to my journey. This time, I was not traveling alone. My friend Belayet, whom I had helped with his Czech Republic work permit visa, also wanted to experience Turkey before embarking on his European travels. To make the plan work, I processed his Turkey visa, ensuring that we could explore this mesmerizing country together.

Our journeys started from different corners of the world—I flew to Turkey from Frankfurt, Germany, while Belayet arrived from Incheon, South Korea. When we finally met in Istanbul, excitement filled the air as we checked into our hotel. However, our initial accommodation was far from what we had expected. The service quality was disappointing, and the complimentary breakfast lacked the flavors we had anticipated. Without hesitation, we decided to change hotels and moved to a new one located right beside the magnificent Hagia Sophia. This turned out to be the best decision we made, as waking up to the sight of such a historic wonder was beyond words.

There, we enjoyed a much better breakfast and even had the privilege of praying Jumu’ah inside the awe-inspiring Hagia Sophia Mosque, an experience that left us humbled and amazed. Our five-day journey in Turkey was nothing short of magical. The city of Istanbul, with its rich history and lively streets, felt like a beautiful intersection of the past and the present. The highlight of our trip was the mesmerizing night cruise along the Bosphorus, where the waters divided Europe and Asia, creating a surreal scene under the moonlit sky. As the cruise sailed through the breathtaking waterway, we met fellow travelers from Spain, China, and other countries, turning the evening into an unforgettable cultural exchange. Over a delightful dinner on the cruise, we shared stories, laughed, and enjoyed the vibrant energy of Istanbul’s nightlife. The gentle breeze, the shimmering lights reflecting on the water, and the music in the background made it a night to remember.

No trip to Turkey would be complete without indulging in its world-renowned cuisine. We took our taste buds on an adventure, trying various Turkish delicacies along the riverside. Though the local food was on the expensive side, the flavors were worth every penny. One dish that stood out the most was the Takus Kebab, a mouthwatering specialty that left a lasting impression. Turkish food is more than just a meal—it’s an experience, a blend of rich spices and centuries-old culinary traditions that tell a story with every bite. Apart from kebabs, we also tried authentic Turkish tea and baklava, which were divine. Sitting by the river, watching the city buzz with life while enjoying these delicacies, was one of the best moments of our trip.

Despite the incredible experiences, there were some challenges that future travelers should be aware of. Istanbul is a bustling city, packed with people and traffic. Getting around requires patience, and it’s crucial to allow extra time for traveling within the city. One particular issue we encountered was the overpriced taxis outside the airport. Many of them charge exorbitant fares and, in some cases, even scam new travelers. To avoid this, it’s best to take public transport or arrange an airport transfer through a trusted service. The tram and metro system in Istanbul is well connected and much more affordable. Additionally, one peculiar breakfast incident remains etched in my memory—a piece of bread so hard that it felt like a rock. If you ever find yourself in a similar situation, be sure to ask someone to warm it up to make it more enjoyable. Breakfast in Turkey can be a wonderful experience if you find the right place, as their olives, cheese, and freshly baked bread are truly delightful.

Another thing travelers should be mindful of is the overwhelming number of street vendors and aggressive sales tactics in tourist-heavy areas. While some vendors offer beautiful souvenirs, others can be persistent in trying to sell their goods. It’s best to remain polite but firm if you’re not interested in making a purchase. Additionally, the Grand Bazaar, while a must-visit, requires good bargaining skills to get the best deals.

As I reflect on my journey, I realize that Turkey is a place that stays with you long after you leave. The city of Istanbul, with its grand mosques, bustling markets, and delicious cuisine, is a treasure trove of experiences waiting to be explored. From the breathtaking Bosphorus to the warmth of the Turkish people, every moment spent there was nothing short of magical. For anyone planning a trip, my advice is simple—embrace the chaos, indulge in the food, take your time, and let Istanbul enchant you. It is a city that will leave its mark on your soul, just as it did on mine. Whether it’s sipping Turkish tea in a centuries-old café, getting lost in the maze-like alleys of the city, or standing in awe before the Blue Mosque, Istanbul is a place where history and modernity coexist in the most captivating way. If you ever get the chance, don’t hesitate—Turkey is waiting for you with open arms.
